The cost of fibreboard sheathings is soaring.
Photo: Supplied A new report by the Australian Fibre Industry Association has found the cost of the material has increased by more than 50 per cent in the last three years.
It also found there was a sharp increase in the number of fibreboards sold.
A lot of the cost increases are due to increased use of the insulation in the new high-speed fibre connections that are being installed in some homes.
“This is one of the most significant cost increases in the past three years,” the association’s director of research, Peter Williams, told ABC Radio National’s Fibre Report.
“There are quite a few reasons why the cost has increased.”
Williams says fibreboard manufacturers are now using a wider variety of materials to make their insulation.
“We have a variety of fibre, different lengths, different thicknesses,” he said.
“Fibreboard has been used for quite a long time as an insulating material, but it’s not very well used for the last 10 to 15 years.” “

The Association says fibreboards are used for insulation in a range of applications.

“These insulation materials can be a very good choice for residential use as it offers an extremely low thermal resistance, but they are also a good option for industrial use where it offers a high thermal resistance,” Williams said.
Fiberboard insulation can be applied to both the insulation that covers the outside of a house and the insulation inside.
It’s a type of insulation that does not have a specific composition, so the insulation can also be applied as a composite material.
It has a lifespan of about 30 years.
The Association recommends that homes with fibreboard insulations be insulated with a minimum of 12 to 20 per cent insulation and that insulation thickness should be no more than 8 millimetres.
A recent report by Fibre Australia says that the new fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) fibre connections are the most common insulation used in new homes.
It found that more than 70 per cent of new FTTH connections had fibreboard in them.
The association says the majority of the increase in fibreboard prices is due to demand.
It says the insulation is being sold in the tens of thousands and is used in about 20 per 10,000 FTTH applications.
It is estimated that about $400 million of fibre is being used in the next 10 years.
